I come from a family who loves to bake. I don’t know if it’s more Maritime tradition or  just a family hobby, but regardless our baking is important to us. In fact, growing up we always had a cookie jar in the middle of our kitchen table, and it was ALWAYS filled with fresh homemade cookies. My mom also had a sign made for our kitchen that read:  “a balanced diet is a cookie in each hand.” I loved helping my mom in the kitchen and was always up for baking a batch of cookies. I specifically remember one my favourite  recipes she would make were these cookies called Outrageous Chocolate Chip Cookies. Basically a peanut butter, oatmeal, chocolate chip cookie all in one. They were glorious!
Fast forward to today and I still love to bake, but it’s so much more obvious to me now the negative affects sugar has on our bodies, not to mention the allergenic qualities of gluten and dairy. The good news is, I’ve found some delicious recipes that resemble so closely the real deal that I don’t even feel like I’m missing out. There are so many options these days when it comes choosing better quality sugars, flours and chocolate, that making the switch in your pantry is actually quite easy to do. I use to stock endless amounts of white sugar, brown sugar, icing sugar and white flour for baking purposes, but now that stuff is completely out of our house, and I use things like almond flour, coconut flour, arrowroot starch, maple syrup and honey instead. If you think this all sounds too good to be true, you have to give these cookies a try to see for yourself.
When I first came across this recipe on Angela Liddon’s site, OhSheGlows.com, I realized they were the health-ified version of my all-time favourite Outrageous Chocolate Chip cookie my mom always made for us and I had to give them a try. They are chewy, gooey, extra chocolatey and the best part is they are gluten-free, dairy-free, refined sugar-free, and they check all the boxes for flavour too!
So if you’re like me and have a love for baking, but are wanting to try new recipes that leave out the less than healthy ingredients, give this recipe a try! You’ll be surprised how well they turn out, and hopefully you’re inspired to try other recipes that leave out the refined ingredients and just use the good stuff from now on 🙂 If you missed the link above you can click HERE for the recipe.
